Iraqi Kurdistan held its parliamentary elections on Oct. 20, 2024, after two years of delays due to disagreements between the two main political parties: the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK). The parliamentary election resulted in a similar composition in parliament for the two major parties, with the KDP winning the largest bloc. However, the share of seats fluctuated among smaller parties, with weak results from the PUK's splinter parties like Gorran. The election may provoke localized clashes in cities and protests like those that followed the 2018 parliamentary elections, but neither major political party will likely orchestrate organized violence.
